Pecel is East Javanese food made of fresh/boiled vegetables served in spicy peanut sauce. It is a perfect vegetarian food. In Banyuwangi, pecel consists of 15 kinds of vegetables from banana flowers to papaya leaves. It is very nutricious and yummy.
Kue balok means cuboid cake in Indonesian. I have never seen or heard about this cake before. I found a street seller baking this cake in Lembang, I was very tempted to try. I didn't expect to like the cake but I did. It was crispy outside and soft inside. It was made of only flour, sugar, and egg but the composition made kue balok so rich in flavor. This cake is a must try if you go to Bandung.
To be honest, I was a bit intimidated by the look of Pasembur, an Indian Malaysian food that consists of chopped fries (from potato to crab) topped with sprouts and red sauce. However when I went to Gurney Drive to have dinner, I saw this Pasembur seller danced and sang to the music while preparing the food. I was tempted to try so I did. Hm...The fries were of course yummy. I wasn't sure about the sauce. It wasn't bad or weird but it wasn't as spicy as I expected. I will not mind eating Pasembur again but I don't think I will crave for it.
After a long and crazily tiring walk along the Gunrey beach we finally found a night market. What were there? Food stalls....Lots of them. Check it out here. (Price range: 1-5 MYR)
I went to a local mall in Banyuwangi yesterday and several young boys, some were even as young as 7 year old, approached me in the parking area to offer traditional dessert called Bongko Kopyor.
I felt heartbroken. This is not the year 1800s yet there are still some children who were born into a life of poverty and misfortune and have to work to survive. I bought some bongko kopyor from some boys for Rp 2.000 (20 cents) each. I hoped I didn't support child labor. Bongko kopyor is a traditional dessert from Gresik, East Java. The one sold in Banyuwangi has evolved from its original recipe. It is usually sold only during Ramadhan, the moslem fasting month. I really had a good time tasting the sweet and savory |
